Black flicker and other issues

Hi

I've recently started using Maya and I'm currently following a tutorial on how to make a Lightsaber. I've come across a few issues I'm confused about though. The first one is this weird black flicker I get whenever I make some edge loops with the Knife Tool. It's almost as though there are faces overlapping faces, but in Wireframe mode, I don't see any that suggests there are. I've adjusted the camera's Near Clip Plane to 1, but that hasn't made any difference. They even stay if I delete the edge loops. o_O

The other issue is selecting specific faces using left click and drag. The tutorial shows the guy using the Select Tool, clicking on a face, right click and selecting Faces and then left click dragging the section of faces he wanted. When I do it, it selects everything.

And finally, I've noticed at times that if I hold right click, instead of the buttons appearing for Face, Edge, Vertices etc., a typical menu bar comes up instead. I'm guessing you have to right click on an edge of the wireframe or face to get those buttons to appear?

Hi!

You have multiple faces on top of each other.

Select one face and move or delete it and you see the problem.

That's what I figured initially, but could never see any in X-Ray mode. If I try to select one ring of faces, it selects the whole body for some reason. Any reason for this? Deleting the Edges/Vertices deleted the ring of faces I wanted to select and the flickering has gone. 🙂

Jesus, compared to Blender, Maya is so needlessly complicated, frustrating and unintuitive! I haven't figured out how to create faces properly yet, but from what I can get, it's horrible. In Blender, it's a simple case of selecting 2-4+ vertices and edges and pressing F. Maya's way of doing it makes no sense. And it's really frustrating me how drag selecting faces when not in X-ray mode is selecting a load of other faces on the model elsewhere. Smiley Mad

Hello, the black flicker can be caused by two reasons, one is double-sided in the polygon and the other is by very large scale projects with very thin mesh. Solution for the second case: increase the number of Near Clip Plane in the properties of the camera. Hope this can help you.

I know this topic is super old, but I just wanted to thank you. I come from the far-off time of two thousand and twenty four, and this black flickering edge **** has been plaguing me for months. Finally, after all this time, I learn that it's as simple as adjusting the near clip plane.

Thank you so much!
