Am I on the right track?

 Inspired by heartstone, wanna to model something like that

About the middle star part, I use cylindar and use a few multicut. the way I did looks ok?

It looks like your previous image looks closer to your first reference image.  The stars alternate in design.  Which your last image does not.  Your last image has all the star points the same.
