Adding a Vertices Where Objects Intersect

Hello and thank you for reading.

This is driving me crazy so I hope one of you knowledgable people can assist me.

firstly, I do not want to use the Boolean. For a number of reasons and ultimately because doing this without using Boolean means I can apply it in other situations.

I have created an object that is a flat cylinder. This is to be part of a car brake assembly. I need to cut holes from it. I’ve created one hole and need to place this in a thinner section of the cylinder.

where the “cup” shaped hole object overlaps the cylinder I’d like to insert vertices along each edge.

this will allow me to delete the excess faces and also use the new verts to snap to.  I do not want the objects combining (yet).

I did create curves on each edge and then tried to trim the curves to the cylinder object but I couldn’t fine a way to do this either.

can anyone tell me how to create vertices on an objects edge(s) or on curves at the point where they intersect another object.

Many thanks

Adam

I would love to know how to do this too.  I do it a rather dodgy way when I need to.

I position the object so I can see the edges throught the face I want add the verticies, ideally using the Snap tools to get an accurate position, and basically trace it using multi-cut. I then snap the new verticies to the ones on the traced object so the shape is correct.

It is a pain in the butt but it works for me most of the time.  Gets a bit complicated when the surfaces aren't flat though.

I’m sure there must be a function for this hidden within Maya. It would be very odd not to include a simple “intersect” function. Autodesk have this function in Alias.

it would be extremely useful and lots of people would benefit.

thanks for the hint. I’ll see if it works for my instance.
