Is combining surfaces enough?

Hello guys,

please I'm trying to get more and more experience with modeling and hard surfacing. And now I feel I am stuck with pure basic question. I make models (as a junior) for games and I still have some struggles with combining surfaces and hard surface. I am still wondering, if its necessary to unite whole geometry or if its enough to just combine surfaces?

For example, I have a chair and there is metal part. Maybe something like this:

May I just create this shape and then just combine it or I have to edit the middle part and connect that "legs"? What happend if I just insert shapes into middle part? Problem with lighting/rendering?

Sorry for this question, I am trying to find it but can't find anything related. You will help me so much. Thanks.

It’s better to keep the main parts separate and easier for texturing, once the asset is finished you can take a combine copy to the game engine.

Im still not sure. I'll try to send picture.

So there are a few parts, it will be metallic. And I just want to be sure, if I understand.. that my final work could look like this. Like two surfaces overlapping, but not be really connected in one model. For sure, I will apply Combine at the end, but I want to just know, if only Combine will be good. 🙂
