Why can't I use the slider in the tool popups?

Hello, I'm trying to use the slider for tools like extruding etc but instead of activating the slider when I click and drag my mouse, it creates a selection box for some reason. I tried restarting Maya and putting all the settings to default. Nothing seems to work!

Windows or MacOS?

If Windows try going into Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Display and changing the Rendering Engine to Direct X11  and restarting Maya.

If that works it could be a graphics driver issue as Direct X11 is a little more forgiving than OpenGL when it comes to graphics drivers in Maya.

When you reset the settings did you delete the preference folder as suggested in the docs?
