Using mouse left ,middle & right click to change XYZ position, like Softimage

Hello,

I'm a long-time Softimage user learning Maya for the first time. Like Softimage, I want to be able to use the left, middle & right mouse buttons to move the XYZ values. For example, in Softimage, if I select an object and click on the scale tool, I can press and move the left button to change the X-axis of the shape. If I press and move the middle button, I can change the Y axis. 

How can I do this in the Maya? I feel it is much easier to navigate like this. Thank you

You cant. The only way todo that is to click once on an axis to get the axis selected. Now the middle mouse does only move that axis.
