Smooth mesh preview (unable to get rid of the non smoothed cage)

So normally if you press 2 you can see smoothed mesh and access its non smoothed cage, and when you press 3 you can access the smoothed mesh without the cage, aka manipulate the smoothed model. Well, I did something to my model, where pressing 2 and 3 makes no difference, both options leave me with a non-smoothed cage. Furthermore, I assigned a custom hypershade color to my some faces, but it does not display in smoothed preview. Something is going on with this model, because when I create a new object it works like it suppose to. Here are screenshot for reference. As you can see on the bottom command line, I have regular unsmoothed mesh (aka 1), then smooth mesh preview (2) and then smooth mesh preview (3) as you can see something is buggy. Neither displays the custom color and I can't access smoothed cage.

I want to give an update on the issue. I was able to fix the issue by selecting entire model, then unselecting a single polygon and extracting the model, at which point i just filled the hole with a polygon face and deleting the solo polygon face that remained from the original model, the new extracted model works as it suppose to. Interestingly enough the solo non extracted face still displayed similar issue by not properly smoothing. I still want to understand what happened if anyone has any idea!?

Hi!

Your object is set to

OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark Adpative, instead of

OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark

Hi!

- Disable Displacement Preview +

- Choose an other Subdivision Algorithm than OpenSubdiv...Adaptive.

- Disable Display ->  "Cage + Smooth Mesh" (Choose "Smooth Mesh")

- Disable Smooth Mesh Preview

Also want to thank people for the solution here. This is one thing I dislike about Maya, sometimes you accidentally, or not accidentally just randomly I suppose, edit some setting and you have to spend so much valuable time looking for a way to reset it to normal. Honestly have no clue how I could have done this since the options to do so weren't even open, but oh well. At least I got it fixed again, thanks!

Go to Attribute editor, choose your polyshape, under Smooth Mesh, turn on Subdivision Method: Use Global (OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark).

Thank you so much. You're literally the only one who actually describes how to fix the issue.

I know it's two years too late, but I had this problem and finally figured out the button combo that makes this happen.

Alt+3.

Chances are you'll probably hitting it while holding Alt to move the camera around and simultaneously try to do smooth preview.

Don't hit Alt+3.

If you do, as  @Anonymous said, go to the object's shape node in the Attribute editor, deselect "Displacement Preview" at the bottom of its first subsection, and select, just above it, "Use Global (OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark)"

Now you know what to avoid and how to fix it if you mess up!

Do you see the Displacement Preview check box?

You need to un-check that. If you don’t, the options above it will be greyed out.

Once you un-check it, you will be able to make the changes you need 🙂

Maya 2020.2 have bug. If you make extrud - cage will be visible forever for all smoothing mesh.
Only greg.steamroller 's solution (with extract) can solve issue.
