showing Displacement maps in viewport?

Hi Community

I am trying to create a terrain using a displacement map. Everything is good except i cannot see the effect of displacement map in viewport. When i render, it shows up well and good but i want to be able to see the terrain in the viewport in order to model my structure accordingly.

Can you please outline the process of showing the effect of displacement map in viewport? I have Maya 2016.

Thanks

Maninder

Accepted solution

Apply the terrain map as a texture deformer Deform>Texture  to a poly plane with enough subdivisions

Or Modify>Convert displacement to polygons

May not suite everybody's needs, but there's a ShaderFX solution. Should work in 2016 too.

ShaderFX Displacement and Tessellation, and Offset Bump Map

Hi!

There are 2 options, one named by @damaggio (Texture Deformer) and the second is Smooth Mesh Preview, it has an option for Displacement Preview.

Please read the Maya Online Help / Documentation for more details.

Hi Damaggio

The solution you provided did work out alright. The only question is regarding the updates, i tried to increase the alpha value in the hypershade displacement node but there was no change to the plane in the viewport. I applied the same command again but that did not help either. Would you please tell me how the editing or updating works?

The displacement has no effect in the texture deformer.displacement is for rendering.

Is it possible to use height maps with PBR shaders? I have tried to add them to Stingray PBR shaders but there seems to be no way to add the tessellation attribute. Which is a real shame as Stingray is great for substance painter shaders.  I am looking for the best solution for previewing substance painter shaders in viewport 2.0, using heightmaps also. Currently the only way i know is to use a directx11 shader, but it is not PBR. Any ideas?
