So iam just playing with sculpting in maya and the brush seems to work correctly only in one direction, when I take a  sphere and go around with brush it works badly, what causes this?

It has a very little effect on it. Almost in every case the same brush lift the surface from front and back side but working opposite on side. If I would work on the border the brush become unpredictable.

I tested it on a sphere with pretty much default settings on "sculp tool: lift a surface". A tried again today and it is okay when direction is set to Average normal, may be it was frozen or something because when I sclupted it before, it lifted the surface but changed to opposite effect during the stroke as it normaly do when set to work only in axis or so. And the direction did almost no effect on beahviour of the lifting brush.
