Quad Draw Creating new Faces Instead of Adding Geometry

I'm trying to add vertices to an existing face so I can extrude it inwards in a specific shape. I tried selecting both the face, and the object itself, making the surface live, and quad drawing the points I need. It always creates a new face instead of adding them to my previous object. I've attached a screen-cap of what I'm working with. I created a reference layer of the shape I want to extrude in. The face its sitting on is where I want to extrude in on. Thank you!

When you make an object live, quad draw using it as a reference so you can add points on it.

There are other multiple ways of achieving what you want, but if you really want to use quad draw.

create the shape using the underlying mesh as a reference, then delete the face where the new created geo is sitting on and then combine the new and reference meshes together and fill then fill the hole.

Another way would be to take the new shape add some thickness to it and boolean (subtract) it on the existing reference surface.

If quad draw is the only way then, duplicate your mesh, use the original as a live mesh.

On the duplicated mesh - delete the face(s) where you want to use quad draw.

And then with the mesh selected - enable quad draw and you should be able to draw new points.
Hope this helps
