Problem with overlapping (?) faces?

Hello all, I am pretty new to modeling in Maya and I am attempting to create a final project for my school quarter. I ran into this issue when selecting faces on my (problematic and messy af) model -- as you can see from the picture, these two faces are connected. Is there any way to fix this?

Hi @Anonymous

One way to fix this would be to delete the faces then use their remaining edges to bridge back to the proper edge this way they'll have their own face.

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!

Hi @Anonymous

I'm just checking in again to see if you need more help with this. Did the suggestion I provided on Friday work for you?

Hello again, when I went back to try your suggestion, I noticed that somehow there was now a hole in the mesh between the 2 faces. I fiddled around with it and somehow I think I fixed it?  Thanks for your help, although I wasn't able to apply this knowledge to my problem this time, I know what to try if it happens again.
