nurbs vs polygons

hi

 

- I'm learning modelling basics and I'm not sure how you decide to use nurbs or polygons?

 

- what are the advantages of each?

 

- Is it correct all menus in maya with "mesh" refer to polygons and "surface" to nurbs?

 

- which one is used the most or is most popular and why?

None of these questions can have an absolute answer. This is only based on a demand of an specific project.

can you give example projects (just invent something) to show me where polygons or nurbs are preferred and the reason for this?

i can't find in any tutorial the answer to this question so I don't know what to choose for my models

We don't know what your models will  be, Highly detail automobiles? creatures? Architecture?...In any case, the knowledge of each one will be an arsenal for a 3 D modeler, I use both ,but one more than the other for specific tasks.

We also have Open subdivision now.

Hi!

 

I could write a whole book about this, but here I have to keep it short.

CAD / Design = Nurbs

Everything else, especially games = polygons

 

However this is very simplified, for example I also used Nurbs to create hero models, like ships, for computer games.

 

I recommend to start with polygons and try Nurbs later.

Does it matter for animation if nurbs or polygons are used?

I mean: are there advantages/disadvantages for animation if the one or the other is used?
