Hi!

The message says "file type or codec" doesn't work.

Do you have the same system (OS + installed software packages) as in school?

Does it work at school with a file with same file extension or with the exact same file?

  • Hey man no but i really don't think it should be much of a problem(i maybe wrong)
  • i have windows 10 they have windows 7 i have maya update 4 they have maya update 3, with uvs no problem, image planes no problem shows up
  • viewport 2.0 works fine for both to my believe haven't seen any trouble other than relinking the files one by one as set project doesn't do the job of getting the linked textures back.
  • In School i have different file extension but even if i have different  extension the rest i can link one by 1  the video i can't  haven't tried in school but i'm really sure it would probably link back ok in school but home i get any video file i even tried an mp4 one(not a one related to assingment for a test run even that did not link)
  • The exact video links fine in school
  • But the video won't link so not sure at this point but idk  if the other things can link to an extent, the video should too,   i'm so confused man 😞

Sorry man if there is any part of this you don't get or if i didn't answer your question ask many times as possible  but really wish i get a solution

Hi!

1. Maya has very limited "movie / codec" capabilities and relies on formats supported by OS/system.

2. Win 10 or Win 7 is a big difference and could be responsible for your problem.

3. I'm a bit confused you say

a) "In School i have different file extension", and

b) "The exact video links fine in school"

??

The best option, also to keep a project compatible to other systems, is to use an Image Sequence.

I'm sorry i can't help you further with this.

For further viewers I know this is an old thread ,Hello, the problem here is you trying to use .mov file which is not supported, in this case please convert your .mov to .avi or jpeg/png sequence and try .Also mp4 is not supported so what you tried gave you the same error.

I've attached a sample avi file for you to test that avi plays in maya just download that avi and try instead of current footage, if it works then convert your footage from .mov to .avi with software like premiere or online conversion websites like- https://convertio.co/convert-mov-to-avi/

which will keep the frame rate same as before but will change the extension

Supported Maya image/video files: psd, als, avi, dds, gif, jpg, cin, iff, exr, png, eps, yuv, pic, hdr, sgi, tim, tga, tif, rla, bmp, xpm. (Source: Autodesk Knowledge Network) this formats are only supported in maya

Accept as a solution if this helps,

Hello,

I use Windows and school computers are Macs.

I have fixed a similar problem before by installing iTunes or Quicktime for Windows, which is not standard for Windows.

Once you install it you will have the codec for MOV files.

--

Since Quicktime I believe was replaced by iTunes, installing iTunes may fix it if Quicktime doesn't

NOTE: These are not Maya products and are from Apple.

Go to your Microsoft Store app, search for iTunes to find it.

I would make sure save your work and have Maya closed before you install.

After you install restart, then test to see if it worked,

Good Luck!

Hello, I have been having the same problem with every movie file. I have tried .avi but it never works. (even tried .mov and .mp4) I have the last update. Converting it to image files works but it is too much of a hassle and my workflow really slows down. It doesn't give me any errors or anything. I have tried every option but nothing works. What is the reason for this.
