Inferencing and accuracy

Hi everyone, I'm still relatively new to Maya, but I'd like to ask about getting accurate topology. I have seen a lot of videos on YouTube, and many people just tend to 'eyeball' everything. I have set up grids at the appropriate scale, but one thing I really miss about using Sketchup is the ability to inference. For instance, when extruding an object's height, it will hit a snap point when it matches a similar object's height already in the scene.

When initially creating an object in Maya I know I can set the height from the channel box, but if I'm further down the road with the object, then this doesn't seem to work very well. I have tried snapping to Vertexes etc, but don't find it intuitive at all. A similar thing happens when I try to match an object's rotation. (IE fixing a 'tile' to a sloped roof).

Lastly - when moving edges/vertices in the side view, is there any way I can constrain the angles on them? 0/45/90 degrees for instance?

Many thanks for any help. Hope these questions make sense

Maya is for vizualization. Not for accurate modeling.

Eyballing is much faster and the way to go.

Just in case here are some neat measurement tools.
