I am working on my graduation project , I have been asked to design a whole city , one that looks like the city in the movie "how to train your dragon 2", but I don't know where and how to start . I am using maya as my 3d design software , but I searched and went over some topics on the internet and found that the software VUE would help me . I am still confused about it because the lack of experience I need help please.

VUE would be used for the landscape only.

You could use Cityengine...but I am thinking since you are doing it like a 3d animated movie you may want it a bit more cartoony.

Stupid question time: would you not use what you were taught over the course of your education?  Thats the whole point of a graduate-level project: demonstrating an appropriate level of knowledge in those areas.

What you were taught may not have been explicitly "how to design a city" (the movie reference would be better referred to as a village) but the techniques taught should still be applicable to the project.  If what you were taught didn't cover this (grass, trees, typical rustic building materials, etc.) then its time to pick a more suitable project.

I guess it depended on the school he, and I use this term loosely, "learned" from.  Good chance they were the typical high cost, google your education type school.
Modelling an entire city?  Yeah, I haven't seen many tutorials on that one, either, however, what are some of the specifics besides general ideas, e.g. how will you be filming going through the city, that will help determine the hero buildings that need to be closer to camera, while the others can be basic textured buildings.
I hope you did finally find a solution and graduated!  I wanted to respond for others to see, plus whenever I see a snide remark about "use what you learned in school," always sets me off as I know of a few "schools" that pass themselves off as great learning establishments are far from that, so if you DID attend one of these places, then there's a good chance you didn't learn what was needed and thus why you felt lost.  Hopefully you just weren't one of those that are just lazy and didn't ask questions when you should have.  :).

Dredge up the past much?

Haha, how did you ever come across this?  Totally agree, though.  Questions like this should be for the instructor.  If you cannot ask the instructor you either went to a bad school or waited til the last minute to attend class.

These forums are for all to learn and ask questions, but if you are paying for an education and ask questions like this you've been ripped off or you have not been to class (sober) all year.  Or ever.

I do freelance on (ugh) UpWork and I find people trying to pay for class work all the time.  It's actually against site policy to offer pay for school work.

EDIT:

Just noticed the time stamp on the OP.  3:31 AM.  Probably the morning before it was due.
