Im making a model for a video game and the character file I have is an .obj file. I was searching and saw that you can open it with plugin preferences but I can't find anything to do with enabling this plugin! can someone please help me?

Go to Window>plug in manager and look on the list for OBJ importer

Obj's should open without a plug-in. Exporting is different. With your scene open - file -import (check box)- file type- OBJ. When the window pops up select -Merge into selected namespaces and rename incoming objects that match. Select single object, you can always separate it in Maya, otherwise objects come in in random sets. You might want to check your outliner after because size can vary quite a bit in Maya if you can't see your object.

It is NOT opening a .obj file or allowing me to import it at all.
