Harden Edge tool not working

We are having alot of hard time with the harden edge tool, for some weird reason after modeling a character it's becomes impossible to harden or soften certain edges, we really have to select a group of edges in order for the tool to work but it doesn't work on single edges:

Yes the "unlock normal" tool fixes that but we have to redefine  all the soft/hard edges for the character from the start, any ideas on how to fix the problem.
(not sure if it's related but when duplicating the mesh it becomes green and we have to re-assign all the different materials)

Hi!

Edges do not have normals, but vertices have.

It seems you need to select at least 2 edges connected to the same vertex to "break" normals at this vertex.

I cannot say if this is the intended behavior, but it works this way.

not really, you must be able to select 1 edge and harden it or soften it if you want.
Here is the tool working normally on a sphere:

Hi!

The edge left seems to have harden already applied and you then harden the second edge (at a later step) which breaks the normal at the vertex in between.

Hi!

Left besides the edge in your video.
