Extruding does not split existing face

Hello there, this is probably something easy to fix but I have been trying for a while with no luck.

Basically, I'm trying to extrude an "inner face" as it is possible to see in the first screenshot. The problem is that the face labelled as "face 1" in the picture does not get split, instead a new overlapping face is created, as shown in the second screenshot. I woud expect that "face 1" got split in two so as to create a gap. Is there a way to fix this problem?

This is how it shoud be, you have Ngon so you wil have to repait that topology and delete and bridge the faces manualy to achive what you want to and dont have overlapping faces.

Thank you for your reply, I can see why this is happening even though it is a bit disappointing. From what i gather avoiding ngons when possible and performing extrsions outwards should solve similar issues.
