Extruded mesh is jutting out at wrong angles

Hello, having a bit of trouble trying to increase the thickness of this mesh frame. The mesh keeps jutting out at wrong angles whenever i change the thickness... Not sure what i'm doing wrong.

I have had this issue many times using thickness.  I think the thickness tool is problematic.  Try using Local Translate Z.
