Extrude a cube along a curve

I can't find any help on this so I'm posting here hoping I can get some help.

I'm just trying to extrude a cube along a cv curve. I position it like in the help document, I select the face near the curve (and it's the start of the curve too), select the curve then click edit mesh> extrude and I either get Error: Line 0 This command requires at least 1 argument... found 0. Or the cube just explodes out into a star.

What do I need to do here? I'm following the steps and nothing is working.

You may be using the wrong extrude tool.  Select the face, then the curve, then click on Mesh Tools->Extrude Tool.  You can adjust the divisions as needed to accommodate the curve.

If that's the case then they need to update the help files because they're telling me to use edit mesh>extrude.

Also do you have any help with using the Extrude tool. Nothing is happening with that either. I'm selecting the face and curve and editing the subdivisions and nothing is happening.

I know precisly nothing about Maya I'm just trying to learn it right now.

Actually, the documentation is correct...but not specific enough.  You can do Edit Mesh->Extrude, but make sure you are choosing the one under the 'Face' section.  Click on the little box next to the menu item to open the settings for the command, and click Edit->Reset Settings, then enter the number of divisions you want to use.  Make sure you only have one face selected when you do your extrude.

It isn't making a difference. I change the number of divisions and nothing changes. All that happens is that the vertexs shoot out and I get a star looking thing. The dialogue box says vertex extrude how do I set it to face extrude?

There are 3 extrude options in the Edit Mesh menu. Make sure you're using the extrude option highlighted in the picture below, which is in the "Face" section of the menu.

Ok, so for whatever reason I couldn't see the separate selections for face/vertex/etc in the pull down menu. It worked. Mostly. Now it extrudes but it also terminates not at the end of the curve but comes back to the starting shape.
