Edges curving in smooth mode

When I go into smooth mode on my model some of my verteces move around causing my edges to curve, I've tried things such as deleting the faces and bridging them and seeing if there are any other faces/edges that are hidden and also the cleanup tool. There are no hidden faces and I'm not sure how to fix this, It is my first time using Maya and 3D Modeling. I appreciate any help 🙂

You could use the Insert Edge tool or the Multi-cut tool to add another edge close to the one you've got. See the 2 edges at the top, try the same for that edge. I call them re-inforcing edges. Close together and they'll keep that part of your topology hard. I think that's what you want. Let me know.

That has nothing to do with his problem, either he has a floating vertex or is a small mesh corruption that can be resolved with an OBJ export/import.

Why would you insert another edge loop on a flat surface? He  has too many edges already.
