Detach/Extract multiple objects/shells as 1 object

Hello, I'm looking for something in Maya that behaves like the 'Detach' button in 3DS Max.

For example,

If I have 1 character object that has 1 sword attached, so that they both are 1 object - I want to detach the sword, so the result will be 2 objects (character and sword).

However, the sword is made of 3 separate smaller objects (Maya people call them 'shells' if I'm not mistaken).

1 - the blade

2 - the hilt

3 - the handle

So, when I select all 3 objects of the sword, and press 'Extract' these are all separated into different objects, and the result is 4 total objects.  This means I have to take an extra step to 'Combine' the 3 sword objects into 1.  Is this the correct way to do it?

I would prefer a way to separate the sword in one step.  Is that possible?

Thank you for your time.
