Deleting faces in polygon

Hello! I'm really new to Maya and I've been struggling to figure out this issue. I was following a tutorial to make several holes in a polygon but my model keeps turning black like it was pooorly shaded in parts (see attached screenshot)

I'm trying to make a grate like pattern for the top of a computer case where the fans will be, while avoiding using booleans to do this effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Megan,

So did you at any point extrude polys. It looks like you have two polys on top of each other. Delete one of the polys by selecting it and hitting delete.

I tried to use the extrude tool to create an inner polygon so I could delete it and be left with a sort of frame.

Ah okay I see what's happened. So basically when you extruded you probably extruded into the existing polygons. In the image I've attached select the edge ring by double clicking the edge. Then hit r and scale it out.

In future don't extrude into your object. It's always better to extrude out/away from your model.
