CV Curve selection for extrude issue.

I'm looking to make a cable that snakes down across the floor, and the easiest way of doing that is to extrude a face across a path. All the tutorials have them clicking on a face of a mesh, and then shift+clicking on a CV curve path, and then hitting extrude. Easy.

For some reason, on my Maya 2017, I'm completely unable to select both the face and the curve. I can select one or the other, but never both.

I've already tried using the (apparently different) Face selection in the right click context menu, but I have the same issue.

Any ideas?

Sorted it myself. 

Had to go to Windows -> Outliner, then select the face, and then ctrl+click on the curve in the Outliner window, and then extrude. 

Bit messy, could have been a bug. Dealt with for now though.
