Classic archicture groove

Hello,

 

I am trying to do some classical architecture and I have issues for the making of the rock grooves.

 

I used to do intersection with this weird looking geomerty to get what I want on Sketchup.

 

But here, no matter what I do, everything disepears when I interesect those 2 geometry together.

 

Any idea ?

Hello!
I would recommend just modelling it out by hand, as you will have much more control over the results vs using a boolean. To speed things up, you can do something kinda like this:

From your reference image, it looks like the inner arch is a half circle. to achieve that shape quickly you can create a cylinder, then just delete the faces you don't need. Here's a starting cylinder:

then I deleted unneeded faces to get the arch. After that I flipped the normals of the geo so that they face the correct way and got this:

After that i grabbed the front edges, and did an extrude to get this:

and then adjusted the verts to kinda match the reference photo:

then I did another extrude on those new edges, and adjusted the verts to get this:

after that I selected where the grooves should be:

bevel_select.png

 

and did a bevel operation to get this:

bevel_after.png

 

after that, I grabbed the faces that were created from the bevel, and extruded them backwards to get this:

post_extrude.png

That should give you a fairly good idea of how I would approach something like this, but there are many other ways to do it. Hope that helps!! Let me know if you have any questions on anything I did here.

I didn't know bevel could help making edge loop this way, very nice 🙂
