Cannot select edges properly and move with orientation set to independent components

I hope you can see the examples, it is the first time I post in the forum and I try to keep it less distracting by using gifs, but resolution might be bad. Apologies

Anyway I am going to explain it the best I can: I am following a tutorial and at one point, after I duplicated some faces, I take one edge and with the Move Tool I pushed it upward. To do so properly you have to set the orientation of the Move Tool axis relative to something, and the tutorial suggests I choose "custom", then "component", then select the edge I want to move. This works fine, however then I have to do the same thing including two adjacent edges and suddenly the mesh just goes crazy instead of allowing me to essentially... extend it. What is going on?

However I noticed that when I select an edge the adjacent ones also get tinted as if they were (partly) selected. This reminds me of the weight influence that selected bones have on neighbouring ones when rigging something.  This does not happen in the tutorial at all! Is the tutor using different Select Tool settings?

Hi,

It looks like soft selection (falloff) is enabled.

It can be toggled off by tapping the B hotkey or from the Soft Selection section in the tool settings.
