Can't turn off backface culling in Maya 2023

Hi there,

I know this topic has been discussed a lot and I read them (almost) all. Still I couldn't find a solution, so I start a new topic. Normally I want to turn backface culling on and get in trouble, trying to do so. This time I want to turn it off and got the same problem reversed. For some reason Maya 2023.3 has turned on backface culling in the scene I loaded.

I tried the following steps.

  1. Turning backface culling on and off in the Viewport.
  2. Windows>Preferences>Polygons>Backface culling: off
  3. Windows>Preferences>Selection>Automatic camera-based selection: Higlighted
  4. Tool Settings>Automatic camera-based selection: Higlighted and Highlight backfaces: Highlighted
  5. Attribute Editor>Mesh Component Display>Backface Culling:off

Still it doesn't select any of the faces of the backside, when I draw a square to select them in component mode in the sideview. I tried to attach the file with the problem, but the site give me some error with (application/octet-stream) and removes it.

It's nuts that single feature is spread across so many places!

I don't have a solution for you, but want to add another issue with backface selection to the topic, so maybe someone will finally start working on it.

That is, assigning backface culling (the one in attribute editor) for multiple objects doesn't override settings if one or more objects have a different setting than the other ones.

So in case a scene has 100 objects, one needs to change it one by one. At least to my knowledge.

Perhaps one can change it in the Attribute Spreadsheet Editor, but I don't see it there.

Just adding to this for the sake of understanding the issue.  The bug resides in the scene, not in prefs or the UI.  I wasn't able to get it to quit backface culling till I exported all assets in the scene and imported them into a fresh one.

Ok, almost one year later I found the solution. If Windows>Preferences>Selection>Automatic camera-based selection is unchecked, it may not change anything, if Windows>Preferences>Selection>Camera-based selection is still checked. Now that I found it, it seems logical to me, but I did'nt was aware of, that there are two options in the first place. Should have taken a closer look.
