Bridge between 2 edges : cross instead of quadrangle

I'm new to maya, learning with online course, and my bridge tool doesnt act as expected in the tutorial. (Maya2018)

Instead of filling the gap between 2 edges with a beautiful quadrangle, it connects the 4 vertices with a cross pattern :
