Hi,

It would be useful to know what you are trying to do because extruding a closed mesh doesn't really do anything useful in this instance but I'll still try to explain what is going on.

When you extrude the mesh the extrusion starts off at zero length so the new (extruded) faces are lying on top of the original faces. (and that is why the faces appear black)

Normally you would adjust the thickness or local translate Z of the extrusion to offset the faces away from the original faces which will fix the issue.

Also note that unlit (black) faces can occur in other modeling scenarios and it is perfectly normal because by default meshes are only lit on the side the normals are facing.

For example, if you create a mesh plane and tumble the camera to look at the bottom of the plane it will appear black too.

To fix this you can enable Lighting > Two Sided Lighting in Maya viewport menu or if you just want to flip the normals on a particular mesh you can run Mesh Display > Reverse on a selected mesh.

Cheers.
