I am novice maya user and i would like some help on an issue I can't solve by myself. I need to attach chain mail to another mesh however i cannot get it to correctly fit this mesh and maintain a realistic appearance. Any help will be appreciated

Good day Mr. Martinez

I suggest on the modeling the chainmail is

1. place the chainmails on the location you want them to be

2. now Chainmail will follow its curve as it's supposed to be , move the vertex of the chainmails to avoid the chains go through the helmet

3. Make sure everything is grouped properly

Some are using practical ways , such as adding planar map instead of modeling it , then add a PNG texture to it

It's all depending on the shot , you can do this if it's close up. You can use the texturing technique if the shot is far away because they won't notice it and saves you render time  & production time.

I hope I have helped you , if this answered your question please press the ACCEPT AS SOLUTION & KUDOS it'll help me a lot by clicking those

Have fun learning

Thank you for your answer. However, i'm looking for a better alternative to
this like a shortcut instead of adjusting each ring to create a more
realistic chainmail. I also do not want to use textures for this. If any
knows of an add on or tool that can do this please let me know.

Glad you responded,

the "Fastest" way would be "SCRIPTING" using Python will make your workflow faster

That's the fastest way if you really want to do it automatically and not manually..

You can do "Precisely" duplicate models as you want as long as you know how to do scripting

Hope that helped you

using maya it is hard to populate a surface with objects the way you want it to. lots of people use other programs. that looks like a pain to have them all connect the right way. i honestly would do it by hand. make the helmet live and the pieces will be much easier to slide around it without coming off the object.
