World space position after freezing transformations?

World space position after freezing transformations?

Please make it possible for the user to expose actual world space transforms for objects that have been translated and rotated and had transforms frozen. After this procedure an object can be floating somewhere clearly not in zero world space, but all transforms say 0,0,0 in the channel box. Absolutely retarded!

Maya obviously know where the object is, so why can't the user???

This is 3D 101 for matching transforms properly, animating things relative to each other and so much more.

It would also be really nice with better and more comprehensive tools for matching pivot transformations to geometry, ie. making the axis like at creation time again or other fixes based on geometry topology.

If you need inspiration regarding how to manage object centres, pivots and transformations, global vs. local please
study Softimage XSI.

This youtube clip shows the issue quite well, while also being flawed as it does not necessarily align the box with the
centre axis of the cylinder...

I hope I haven't misunderstood what you're describing, but here goes:

When you freeze, say, a mesh in Maya, the transformations on the mesh's transform node are baked into the geometry (the vertices on the shape node), and the transform node is reset to an identity matrix.

At that point, although you may intuitively 'see' a transformation in the geometry, Maya itself no longer keeps such information, and it would require computer vision / machine learning analysis to extract it.

However, you do still have access to the geometry's calculated centroid via the shape's 'center' attribute.

If you want to retain transformation information, but zero-out the Channel Box channels, you can do this by parenting your object under an empty group node with the same transformations. At that point it will be 'zeroed' relative to its parent.

There is a very simple way to know the global coordinate of the object you want.

You can:
♦ Know the global coordinate of a new object using a Constraint Point
♦ Use a folder to reset global coordinates.

Careful! Remember that Constraint Point positions 2 objects according to the Pivot Point of each object.

1. Create a new object.
I will call it GlobalPos_OBJ

2. Select objective
Select (outliner) the object you want to know its position.

3. Select GlobalPos_OBJ
Holding the Ctrl key selects the GlobalPos_OBJ object
(the one we just created)

4. Change menu
At the top left, change the mode to "Animation" using the dropdown.
You are probably in "Modeling"

Dropdown → AnimationDropdown → Animation

5. Constraint Point
Go to the "Constraint" menu and select "Point"

Eliminate the unnecessary constraint that was just created in the GlobalPos_OBJ object

6 Global coordinates
Now, the GlobalPos_OBJ object has the global position of the object you wanted to know its global position.

───[ Switch to global coordinates ]───
If you need to reset the values to your frozen object
I recommend that you do the same but with a folder

7. Put the object inside the folder.
If you have done the previous steps with the folder, the folder should be in the same position as your object.

Note: You can create a folder by selecting any object and pressing [Ctrl] + [G] and taking out the object that has been put inside

8. Backup position
Write down the coordinates that the folder currently has.
Only if you want to put your object back where it was

9. Move to global position 0
Move the folder to position 0,0,0

10. Freeze Transformation
Remove the object from the folder (optional and as a precaution)
and Freeze the transformations

You already have your object with global coordinates at 0

───[ Put the object back where it was ]───

11. Restore Backup
Simply give your object the position you noted before (Step 8 )
