STOP DEVELOPING NEW TOOLS for 1 YEAR - instead spend everything in BUG FIXES and basic usability IMPROVEMENTS!

STOP DEVELOPING NEW TOOLS for 1 YEAR - instead spend everything in BUG FIXES and basic usability IMPROVEMENTS!

Since years there are a lot of unanswered requests for many improvements of basic tools.

Such as usability of Node Graph, Hypershade, Construction history, Bevel, TimeEditor with Blendshapes, Containers, Rigs, Viewport, Performance, compatibilities between different packages of Maya or with I/O... just to name a few topics of my scope.

On the other hand all developement resources seem to go into Bifrost (*at least from what I see), which does only help for a narrow field of tasks and will only help a few people.

Please start overhauling Maya in the basics.

When I need Houdini, I will just download it, but when I use Maya, I want it to be reliable fast software with great UI and interoperability.

Finally someone post this topic,
The developer here not active at all.
the under review from 2018, and we never know what exactly happen is it under development ? or they just ignore it?
we pay now just to fix this and that... and put 0.1%  like fixing bridge with uv that's all !
I feel like there are  2 developer  handling Maya .
look at blender they are active 100% every week there is new stuff new development etc...
so please give us an answer what happening here ?
if we pay just to rent software that's a shame, 4 years we didn't see good stuff  especially for modeling.
We need at least roadmap , maybe you are planning to add new tool each 10 years.

@tj.galda
Please see the Maya ideas forum and see that many ideas from 2018  until now didn't get any information.
thanks

Kloworks, I agree.  Blender is where the future of 3d seems to be headed.  Not Maya.  If they haven't even gotten rid of the save an empty scene prompt, since Maya first began, then it's time has come.

Maya has 5 "node editor", none of them is completed! there are design tradeoffs, annoying glitches, they just ignore it for years!

Maya has 2 "asset manager": Visor and Content Browser. both useless! what kind of manager is "read-only"?? there is no easy way to save your property to those "managers".

Anybody notice: in the Categories of Good Ideas, improving the UI is the most popular, followed by "Modeling & Texturing", next comes "Animation and Rigging". yet their focus seems to be on "Dynamics & FX".

Yes UI!

I am working with two monitors, but with Maya I can use only one, because one is 4k and the other lower res.

Watch my screenshots:

and now for the 100th time the motion trail is not displayed, since 15 minutes...

(I know I have to restart maya, toggle use anchor transforms, animation prefs... again it doesn't work)

I hava a good recipe for staying mentally and physically healthy when working with this software for a longer time:

Get rid of your hopes that any time soon Maya will be the high performance user friendly tool you need for you to get the job done!

The dinosaur hypershade/hypergraph/nodeEditor problems are still with us. This alone is a reason for jumping the ship.

My absolute favorite thread is still here from @alexandervrublevsky

because it makes instantly clear, why "old"  existing tools must be further improved

I would go beyond and say that Maya should be rewritten from scratch, coherent, lightweight and get rid of all the redundancies.

New stuff is added but legacy stuff doesn´t go anyway, like...

@leecaste I totally agree with you.

Maya hasn't found its way in almost a decade, many of the major updates are bought and independent, like a patchwork ugly monster.

Hell yeah!

Everything Maya does is wrong! the content browser even opens up files incorrectly as an Untitled document!! so when you want to save and create a thumbnail for the content browser you can't save it as a file you opened it as, rather you have to remember and retype it in... so the function of the content browser so far actually makes it slower! even though you get to have a thumbnail of an object ..  also the content browser is really really hard to find  also moving something like the content browser to an area you could easily see it and click is it hard as well.... why is it like this!?  doesn't make any sense at all ..

There seems also a need to update Alembic... I'm having frequent problems in exchange. A developer told me, Autodesk Alembic is not up to date (Max and Maya), which would be causing the problem.

In recent days wanted to work with Maya to Adobe "After Effects LIVE LINK". I have spent hours of research, but all download links are dead, it seems "discontinued" to me. Watch here: https://area.autodesk.com/downloads/Adobe-After-Effects-Live-Link/ It was introduced only 3 years ago with a lot of advertising! And is of course important, also in interaction with MASH and motion graphics. Is it really so economic and smart, first to develop and then not to maintain the existing tools?

Click the blue Download button at the left on that web page to download it (not the adobe exchange). The download works here.

@lucericr Thanks regarding Livelink. Found now the right download button. It was a long search, I had before also posted this question unanswered in the animation section here, and in the Adobe forum there is also a long list of people asking without an answer. The text description on both pages should be updated.

It does seem that people are frustrated with a lot of basic functions in Maya.  I think those concerns are valid and need serious consideration.

I've worked in Maya since 2002 and have trained three of my colleagues who worked in 3DS Max and Cinema 4D, and all three have had a very difficult time learning Maya, mostly due to its inconsistent UI.  It is very cluttered and difficult to learn, particularly the menus.

To me, it seems that going through Maya's UI with a fine-toothed comb, making it consistent, simple, readable, reducing the number of clicks, submenus, etc, is low-hanging fruit.

I agree with this whole-heartedly.

Maya is missing lots of basic functions that have been present for ages *in other auto-desk products*.

Maya's weight painting doesn't let you subtract weight.

Maya doesn't have a good smooth function that accounts for edge length.

Maya doesn't have a good skin-weight editor spreadsheet

Maya doesn't have user-friendly tools for re-pivoting skin influences or setting new skin bind poses.

Maya doesn't have a way to copy-paste a blendshape between two meshes (like copy-skin weights)

Maya doesn't have a way to copy-paste weight maps between two meshes

Maya's node editor is buggy. It's also messy and resists any attempt to organize it.

Maya doesn't have basic utility nodes like boolean logic, modulus or trigonometry

I mean ... no trig nodes? Really? We're literally creating *animated geometry* - and nobody thought "gee, we should probably give the artists some trig nodes".
