Simplified Render Layers

Simplified Render Layers

Having a simplified Render Layer editor would be great for those of us not working on large complex multi-user scenes.   Functionality along the lines of the Legacy Render Layers would be all we need.   Yes, this can be set in Maya.env, but it would be better and more stable to have this integrated into and compatible with the modernized Render Setup framework.

I think many users would benefit and ADSK could demonstrate some welcome consideration for individuals, smaller studios and the Design community in general.

This should be fairly simple as its more about hiding features than adding new ones - and if you need the power, just turn on the full-featured version.

For example - name based collections?   too much - if its in a render layer, layer - render it, if not don't.

Difficult to set up layer overrides like before - if I only need a few of them, the legacy method was far simpler and more direct.   The new Render Setup has unnecessarily complicated and limited my workflow in this regard.

not digging this idea. I really like the new render setup and I know many people think it's an improvement.

Old layers were easy to setup - select parts>make a render layer> change or reassign shaders, etc. - done.  Simple for Designers and one-offs, but often  very hard to untangle with a lot of overrides, etc. for large scenes.

New system - Make a layer, make a collection, add stuff, make a sublayer, add stuff, make an override, add stuff... rinse repeat.   Much easier to interrogate, but tedious and unnecessary for many users in the non-complex scene/integrated workflow world.   Also it doesn't respect the render layers of legacy scenes.

Why don't you just use the legacy system instead? We are still leaning on it very heavily where I work. I also find the render setup system to be unnecessarily complicated with a lot of redundant and complicating "features" that can be achieved in other ways. At some point of course I expect AD will stop supporting the legacy system entirely, in which case we will have to rebuild all our assets. But until then we are continuing with the old system.

Totally agree, however it’s a major issue with 2028.4 - if you use the
legacy RL’s it will immediately crash on opening any scene with legacy
layers- had to roll back to 2018.3. I logged the bug and ADSK was very
responsive. t##- Please type your reply above this line -#
