reoder outliner by node type

reoder outliner by node type

It would be nice to be able to reoder the objects in the outliner by node type - for example, cameras at the top, then geometry, then locators, then sets. Hierachies with mixed node-types should not be destroyed. It should simply apply to the top parents for visual organistion. Preferably with an alphabetical option too.

Great Idea Callum, thanks for sharing!

technically speaking... it can already do this...  however, pretty much everything you showed in your example (locators, cameras, polygons, curves, etc.) are simply a transform with a different type of shape node parented under them...  So, when organizing them 'alphabetically' (instead of 'by hierarchy'), maya is sorting all the transforms together at the top - which 'jumbles' all the perceived 'node types' from a visual point of view...  While this is technically correct, it's not the desired effect.

If you were to show all non-DAG nodes in the outliner as well (multiplyDivide, plusMinusAverage, multMatrix, blendTwoAttr, etc), you would see them all grouped by node type below the collection of transforms at the top since those nodes don't actually have a transform associated with them.

But, it would be nice to have some sort of option that factors in shape nodes of transforms in the sorting options.  How would you prefer to sort the order that the node types show up in?  I kind of think alphabetically would be good...  but it could be nice to have some option to give preference to certain node types if you happen to work on them often (such as all nurbsSurfaces and polygons at the top).
