I'm happy to say you can now do this in the latest versions of the software. You can also make the shelf a square, have it floating on a second monitor, or whatever else you think would be useful.
And you can save different layouts withe the workspaces that are also shareable as simple files to others too.
I just want to come back to this as I've been fiddling about with the shelves a bit more.
- I think 'add seperator', that can now be found in the bonus tools, should not be in the bonus tools. It should just be there as an option in the shelf. Also, once a seperator has been made, you should be able to move it and give it a colour.
-Every shelf should be able to have it's own 'look', as in, only icons, icons and name, icon next to name, etc. Currently, those options are also very limited. For example, I would quite like the option to display only names, and choose the size of the font, or with a given width or height, color...you name it.
- The icons are restricted to a 32x32 size image. Maya is supposed to be able to rescale other sizes, but trust me, it doesn't.
- A wider range of custom icons would be nice, With a more organised interface.
- A possibility to right click on a shelf, and have it as a menu at the top of the interface. This is handy if you have lots of custom scripts (but no icons) and long names. When they're written stacked vertically it reads much better.
-As a general comment, there is a lot of overlap in buttons. By that I mean, there are lots of buttons that can be found in the shelves and menus. A slightly more screen-space efficient organisation would be helpful.
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if any of this is of interest.
