Hypershade - maximize window + general UI screen estate issues

Hypershade - maximize window + general UI screen estate issues

Mayas UI is designed so the combinations of viewports and panels wastes oodles of space, requiring working on multiple monitors to get things done in a sensible way, without having to move or minimize/maximize windows all the time while working. This results in a horrible waste of time for the user.

Please revise the general UI so it is possible to layout your UI in an optimal way when working. Softimage XSI has the ability to have a fullscreen viewport where sidepanels take up very little space (less than half of the equivalent Maya panels) and have any relevant Property Pages (Attribute Editors) open as floating windows which the user can reposition, resize, minimize in place and quickly open again as needed. This frees up screen estate for viewport work while having relevant tools at hand without taking up unnecessary space or having to do handcripling keyboard shortcuts + mousebutton clicks to get to tools.

One very good example is the Hypershade where it would be very helpful if it was possible to maximize the graph workview to full screen when working on large complex shader networks. As it is I have to zoom in to make connections loosing overview and often having to move nodes forth and back to rewire, which is a waste of time.

Please study Softimage XSI for all this kind of handy workflow enhancing UI design. See attached for inspiration.

i couldn't agree more with this. The UI needs so much optimising. I posted about this a few weeks ago too.

I agree that the Hypershade could use some fixing, particularly the node graph. For the most part I don’t even use the Hypershader and use the standard Node Editor paired with the Attribute Editor. If I need to grab a material I can look in the non-DAG nodes list or (if I named it something sensible), search and select if from the search bar at thebes end of the status line.

@userX4542: If you posted something similar here, please post the link. It’s counter-productive to have multiple of the same request. If yours has more votes then I urge potential voters here to vote on the pre-existing idea.

Hi Mike,

Feel free to search for it. It's a very broad topic about the whole UI in general. There are many many posts about the UI. Softimage was very optimised, quick and required few clicks, while maintaning screenspace. I'm sure there are many workarounds or hacks for specific tasks but this doesn't address the core issue.

I strongly agree with Callum here. Mayas UI is poorly designed from the inception and as Callum says, it is a core issue.

Agreed.  Using Windows 10 and having NO LABELS on the minimized windows is a HUGE problem.  Plus, minimizing the main window and maximizing it makes all the other windows re-open as well.  This all stems from an archaic and dreadful CORE issue.

Oh, and BTW, take 10 friggin' cents out of everybody's subscription price and at the very least, UPDATE THE BUG REPORTING form to included modern processors.

Maya seems like a forgotten grandma in a nursing home somewhere.  At least pay her a visit and tend to her basic needs every once in a while instead of sending her new technological gadgets that don't make sense to her tired old brain.
