Mayas UI is designed so the combinations of viewports and panels wastes oodles of space, requiring working on multiple monitors to get things done in a sensible way, without having to move or minimize/maximize windows all the time while working. This results in a horrible waste of time for the user.
Please revise the general UI so it is possible to layout your UI in an optimal way when working. Softimage XSI has the ability to have a fullscreen viewport where sidepanels take up very little space (less than half of the equivalent Maya panels) and have any relevant Property Pages (Attribute Editors) open as floating windows which the user can reposition, resize, minimize in place and quickly open again as needed. This frees up screen estate for viewport work while having relevant tools at hand without taking up unnecessary space or having to do handcripling keyboard shortcuts + mousebutton clicks to get to tools.
One very good example is the Hypershade where it would be very helpful if it was possible to maximize the graph workview to full screen when working on large complex shader networks. As it is I have to zoom in to make connections loosing overview and often having to move nodes forth and back to rewire, which is a waste of time.
Please study Softimage XSI for all this kind of handy workflow enhancing UI design. See attached for inspiration.
