Graph Editor curve selection mask

Graph Editor curve selection mask

One aspect of Softimage that I actually grew to enjoy while I was at Blur Studios was the way that, in the graph editor, if you select a curve, it's kind of like a temporary selection mask on that curve. It bypasses the need to isolate curves because you can just pick a few curves from your graph and while they are highlighted, if you do a drag selection on top of that, it then only selects keys on those selected curves. If you drop your selection and do a drag selection over keys it selects all visible keys. It was pretty simple, but very effective.

This would be pretty cool. I would also love a similar feature for the Viewport.

For example, instead of relying on Maya's Object Selection mask for selecting in the viewport, imagine this:

  1. Create a Set with the desired Controls/objects you'd like to adjust,
  2. Enable the imaginary "Selection Filter: User Set" mode,
  3. Turn on SoftSelect with Object mode,
  4. Adjust the Brush size using the B+MiddleClick hotkey,
  5. Select an object from the set within the Viewport,
  6. You can now "sculpt" a pose on a character with a modifiable falloff while only affecting the objects within the User-created set.

This would essentially behave like a soft-IK.
