glTF support

glTF support

(Copied from original User Voice forum)

"Those of us in the VR/AR industry are rapidly embracing the glTF 2.0 file format.

Sites like Sketchfab are embracing this format and it is gaining momentum.

However, right now, creating glTF assets is very difficult-- there are a few ways of converting existing formats but most of them are extremely cumbersome, require other software (Blender, for example), and are generally not very robust yet.

I will speak on behalf of us in the VR/AR industry in saying that we really need the support of companies like Autodesk to help us.

Seeing as Autodesk is listed as one of the companies supporting glTF, I would love to know what kind of timeline we're dealing with for getting native export support from Maya and other 3d packages"

Original poster here. 🙂   It's almost been 1 year since my original post so I figured I'd try to find out the status of glTF support. FWIW, other companies have since embraced the format (Google, Facebook, Sketchfab, Allegorithmic Substance Painter, and Blender, to name a few big ones).

The lack of gltf support in Maya is bad enough, but 6 months in 'Gathering Support' status?? Time to wake up Autodesk.

This is a "must have" feature if you are serious about VR/AR content creation, please add support for it.

For people who (like me) came looking for news and found none. The repo below is a more recent effort on a GLTF plug-in for Maya 2018 (master branch) and 2019 (in one of the dev branches).

I believe plane glTF exporter won't be not enough. To do real stuff like 3D configurator, product showcase or AR/VR app you need some full-featured tool capable of animation, complex lighting and interactivity. Check out Verge3D for Maya released recently and compare its features to the features offered by glTF-2.0.

Hi.

would it be possible to get a proper GLTF exporter inside Maya for christ sake, the original post is 2 years old.

EVERY major dcc has GLTF support. GLTF is a defacto standard for VR/WEB/Mobile. Why do we always have to rely on external stuff to do trivial stuff inside Maya ? So if nobody is able to code a GLTF exporter at AD. Please COPY / PASTE this code and make it default plugin inside Maya.

Thanks

please include IMPORT functionality as well as export.

Hi,

This is something which pop up as a need for me as well, so I was wondering what is the news about this ?
I found this:
https://github.com/iimachines/Maya2glTF/releases/tag/v1.4.0
And this:
https://github.com/matiascodesal/maya-glTF
And this:
https://doc.babylonjs.com/extensions/Exporters/Maya

And very simple 2 separate plugins (import/export) from Simlab.
https://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/Maya_Plugins.aspx

Also I see that blender and Houdini have their solution for vertex animation textures, didn't find anything for Maya yet.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

Aleksandar

According to a statement in the BabylonJS forum, they are stopping the development of their MAYA exporter because Autodesk is about to relase their own one.
Is there any time estimation to that release?
They show a video of a "beta" exporter for MAX, and it is VERY limited.
I really hope Autodesk exporter can do, at least, the same as BabylonJS one for God sake.

Well, this has been long time waiting for this feature.
In the meantime I've found this
https://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/gltf-from-maya-main.aspx
I really liked simlab products, but subscription for plugin is a strech.

Any news about a glTF exporter for Maya 2024? Can anyone from AD leave a comment? As there is no more exporter from the Babylon team for 2024, it is not possible to export a glTF from Maya anymore. Unbelievable.

@SequenzGmbH
If you are in rush, except simlab solution (see above), there is also prototech.
https://prototechsolutions.com/3d-products/maya/webgl-exporter/
I've tested their PDF 3D exporter, and even it's supporting maya til version 2022, I was able to make it work for maya 2024 as well.
Yes, as mentioned above, I would like to see this supported by maya directly.

Thanks for the tip. For our current project we still can use Maya 2023 + Babylon exporter, but we want to switch to 2024 in the next weeks. So please AD: Come on!

I guess Autodesk doesn't want to contribute to make glTF the standard in the industry

Guess we all should wait until USD is the holy grail for web 3D content. So speak you again in 10 years, friends. What a ridiculous company policy!

"OpenUSD will join other standards like glTF for sharing small 3D assets and 3D tiles for streaming digital twin views.  USD has been called the HTML of 3D content since it provides a framework for efficiently organizing collections of objects into various perspectives. In contrast, glTF is more like the GIF format for sharing individual objects." (Steve May, CTO of Pixar and the new Chairman of AOUSD)
