What is happening here?

Image on the left, everything seems fine but when I turn on smoothing Polygons go bright green. Shortly after Maya crashes as well. I have tried putting Lambert material back onto the object but nothing happens.

My first guess would be a video drivers issue. Do you get an warnings or errors in the output window?

I'm not sure, I opened the file and polygons have gone green, that is a copy/paste of the output window

Did you create the model?  Is there a shader in your hypershader with that color material?

Whats with the split screen screenshot?

I created the model, the screen shoot is two images of the same object. There are no shaders or materials applied.
