Weird non-selectable wireframe

I've been using the Malcom rig and a rig from Long Winter, as well as some assets I found on the internet. I've been referencing all my objects except for a few planes, which are also affected by this issue. I just tried opening my file and I initially get this message even though all my assets are referenced as .fbx files. It then opens the scene but everything is a grey wireframe that will not let me select it. It also seemed to move my animated characters away from their curves and placed them in their default T-pose. I'm not very savvy when it comes to the technical side of Maya and this has me very confused because I've referenced everything properly and not sure what's causing this. Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi @Jbaumler5

Thanks for posting! Is this error associated with a specific reference, or universally across your scene? You can go to File > Reference Editor and turn assets on/off to see if the error is tied to one reference 🙂

Did these assets come from a different program (like 3ds Max)? Any chance you could post or send me a private message with your scene file? I'd be happy to take a look at this 🙂

Thanks for your time! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi!

It looks like they are set to template.

For further help please upload a scene-file (main scene + at least one reference file)

I'm fairly confident it's some sort of a template issue, possibly as well as a referencing issue. I was able to get everything untemplated but the models were still in the T-pose and not in the correct place, as in not where their curve were.
I then tried to save the scene out and it resorted back to being templated. I've tried rereferencing my references but that does not work.

Hi Jordan,
I'm fairly confident it's some sort of a template issue because I was able to go to "show/hide selection mode icons", switch to hierarchy and combinations, and then switch to template. I was then able to select everything greyed out that I couldn't select before. I then untemplated everything but my character models were still in their T-pose and not connected to their rig, so I'm thinking there may be a referencing issue as well? I tried saving the scene out after untemplating everything but everything resorted back to being in template mode. I can share scene and referenced stuff through Dropbox but I need and email to share it with. Let me know.

Hi,

I've attached a link to my files for the scene.

Let me know if it doesn't work.

Another interesting thing just happened that may be useful helping you figure this out. I just created an object within the scene, a cube, and saved the scene. After saving the cube was put into template mode just like everything else in the scene.

Hi!

There are massive changes to the references in the scene.

Check "List Reference Edits", also setAttr ...template can be found there.

If i undo these changes (for some i need to unload the reference) it looks as expected.

One reference file "Walter_v1.47.mb" is even set to template in the original file !?

Also disabling template and saving works, and a newly created cube looks as expected after saving and opening the scene.

I don't have the time to test this further but i can't see anything weird. (I can't test with Maya 2015)

Interesting. So this basically means there's nothing really more you can do and that I should be able to get the same results as you?

Also, were the character models connected to the rig itself?

Hi!

You could try

- update Maya (if there is a higher SP available)

- Try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2018 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2018 to 2018_backup (or even the maya folder to maya_backup). Maya creates new folders (don't copy preferences from previous Maya versions). Detailed at:

So here's what happened. Long Winter references their rigs out through the internet. They had server issues causing various issues to their rigs and scenes. This issue somehow affected the rest of my scene. They ended up getting it fixed late last night and now everything has returned to normal. Thank you both for trying to help. I appreciate it!
