Viewport 2.0 strange flicker issue with wireframe on shaded

Seeing some strange artifacts in maya 2018 when wireframe on shaded mode is on. There are constant flickering of wireframe artifacts seen through other pieces of geometry.

It does appear to be somewhat clipping plane related as adjusting the near clip plane to a very large number helps however the value has to be so great that the clip plane clips geometry I actually want to see when it gets close to the camera. Any ideas what could be causing this graphical bug?

Hi @RickFalck

It looks like it may be a GPU issue. What do you have for a GPU and what driver version is it?

Please let me know when you get a chance!

Hi @RickFalck

This issue can be a bit tough to reproduce so out of curiosity, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

While this type of issue shouldn't be scene specific it may be easier for me to reproduce and see the strange artifacts you're getting on screen.

Let me know if anything changes!

Agree that I don't think this would be scene specific.. but i have attached the scene below.

Hi @RickFalck

Thanks for attaching the scene file! While the artifacts weren't as apparently as yours were I was able to see a few very slight odd blew dashes and jagged shapes when in shaded wireframe.

That said, I tweaked the far and near clipping plane values and was able to remove some of the artifacts but not all of them. Aside from updating your GPU drivers and or changing the far and near clipping plane values I wonder if your monitor could be part of the problem.

Unfortunately this issue isn't 100% reproduceable and seems to vary from machine to machine so it's unlikely to be a bug but when you get a chance, please try the suggestions I made above and let me know if they help at all!

Yes, if i set the near clip to a really high value, the issue seems to be reduced but then the clipping becomes an issue.

Note that this was reported to me by a coworker, and myself and one other were able to repro on all of our machines. I will update my drivers and see if the issue is any better.

Hi!

@RickFalck and @sean.heasley.

This is a bug in Maya.

The flicker is caused by incorrect border highlight creation where no borders are (correct borders are not visible through objects).

To reproduce this:

Create a Polygon Cube, enable Display Borders, set Border Width to a high value like "100" for easy preview, then move camera, happy flickering.

border_flicker.gif

Workaround / Solution: Disable Preview of Border Edges for your meshes.

Don't ask how long it took to find this out, but feel free to give as many Kudos as you like (yes, i know you can give only 1, but 100 would be better in this case).

Someone at Autodesk should log this bug.

@RickFalck if you want:

Report this problem (bug?) to Autodesk.

Hi @mspeer

Thanks for taking the time to figure this out! I noticed the flickering as well after following your steps, granted it wasn't nearly as intense as it is in your screenshot. I'm curious if the issue varies across display monitors.

That said, I went ahead and logged this issue with our dev team and while I can only give you 1 kudos I'll give you 100 in spirit Smiley Wink.

Hi!

I used a Border Width of "100" to better show the problem.

The displayed thickness of the line is the length of the border and the length/thickness varies with object and camera position/orienation. I have chosen a sample as screenshot that better indicates the problem, most times the line is thinner (the border is displayed shorter, like 1 Pixel length only).
