UV Unfold not working in 2017, 2018, but does work in 2015

I have the Unfold 3d plugin loaded and have tried reloading to no avail. 

 

Whenever I unfold a set of UV's in 2017 or 2018, I get random, bizarre results. If I make the same cuts and unfold in 2015, I get what you would predict. 


I've had issues with Unfold before in 2018 -- but that was because the Unfold3d plugin was not enabled by default. Once enabled, things worked as expected. 

 

Now my issues seem beyond what I have been able to find via search or troubleshoot on my own. I can just do the work in 2015, but I am not very familiar with the interface in that version and would prefer to get things working with 2018. 

 

Any help is appreciated.

Some additional information. 

 

I have ran mesh cleanup and thoroughly inspected the model for anything abnormal. 

 

Sometimes I get unfold's that result in UV's exploding and going everywhere, but I also get this perfect circle unfold as well, despite where I place my cuts.

A little more information:

 

I did an automatic mapping, which broke the head mesh into like 6 different pieces, and in that case the unfold seemed to work as expected. But of course, that is not how I need to unfold my head mesh. The way I am working is by starting with a planar projection from the Z direction, and then just cutting the usual lines along the back of the head, cheek folds, chin, etc.

After 4 hours of troubleshooting with zero results, I think I'm just done with UV layout in Maya. I'm going to look at other apps.

I'll come back to this and get a scene file ready. But I ended up using the UVlayout app so I could keep progressing with my work. 

 

I'd like to get things working in 2018 because i really like the relative ease of use compared to other versions, and I like doing most of my work in a single program as well, but I've got to wait a while because too much troubleshooting gets me all pissy.
