Soft Select Tool Problem: Maya 2016

Hello,

I have been having issues with the soft select tool where when I select one vertex it select multiple random edges. I have solved this problem in the past by exporting as an OBJ and bring that back into Maya. However, this solution does not seem to work. I also tried deleting history, and deleting unknown nodes. Does anyone have an alternative solution? Thanks!

Hi

You may check for some corrupt edges in your mesh, Mesh Component Display -> Display Borders.

From another thread:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-modeling/select-one-edge-and-another-one-moves/m-p/6632756

If you can't find the error please upload a scene-file.

Thank you for replying. I'm afraid that method didn't do me any good. I'll keep trying, but here is the file I've been working with.

Hi!

The model works here without any Problem (Maya 2016 EXT2 and Maya 2017). Please make sure you have the latest Maya update installed. If there is a problem related to your mesh in combination with your Maya Version, split your model into different parts, with Edit Mesh -> Extract, to find out where the problem is.

Hi!

By setting the value for the border size to an exaggerated value of 100 (only 8 in screenshot) i was able to find 2 corrupt edges. Delete the faces around these edges and then re-build them using the Append to Polygon Tool.

Hello!

Thank you for your help and taking time on this. I am afraid I don't understand what you mean by border size. Where are you viewing that setting? Is it the same as "Border Width"?

Also, when I get rid of and fixed those faces that surround the problem area demonstrated in your picture, it didn't seem to fix my problem. When in soft select mode I am still seeing a strange selection pattern even with only one vertex selected.

I managed to find the corrupt edge. That seemed to fix the problem! 🙂 Thanks so much for your help. But I am still confused how you managed to locate the corrupt edge.

Hi!

Glad you found the corrupt edge!

You are right i was using Border Width (not size).
