Selection problem Maya 2016

My menu has bugged out and I cannot select any of my objects from the viewfinder. Right clicking only gives me the Complete Tool and the Select All options instead of the default menu. I am on object selection and everything is on. I run Maya 2016 on a Mac and as far as I know everything is updated.

Update: I've resolved the issue. I had the Reference mode toggled on my layer which didn't allow me to select my objects.
