Saved keys deleted on re-open

Hello,

I'm having an issue with keyframes that are clearly set and saved getting deleted when I open the file again. Some details on the issue below:

1. I'm animating using a picker (which I haven't changed or had issues with before this) and all the keys on a specific button (of Maya's choice apparently) gets deleted when I open the file. Not every time, seems random. This week it was all the keys on the IK button for the left leg and all the keys on the left arm. Three weeks ago it was the Chest. No issues in-between those dates so I thought it was a one-time occurrence with the chest control, which I ended up re-animating and hasn't lost its keyframes this time.

2. I save multiple times throughout my sessions and save multiple versions of progress. Currently on version 20 and I haven't opened files 19, 18, or 17 in a week,  but when I open them now, all keyframes on the same left leg and arm as version 20 are all gone.

3. I've tried opening the files on a different computer with a fresh installation of Maya and the picker, same results.

4. I've tried different versions of Maya, same result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous  and welcome to the community!

Is there a lot of history on the model/rig? If so you may need to delete that and then animate to see if the keys stick.

Another quick test you can try is exporting everything as an fbx then import that into a fresh empty scene, save it and then work from there.

Please let me know if anything changes!

Hi Sean,

Thank you for your reply, I tried to export all as FBX and everything transferred over except the actual rig. I don't know how to check/clear the history on a model/rig as this rig is from my school (AnimSchool). I've been working with this rig (BlockRig) for two months and this is the first time its done this keyframe wipe. It not only didn't save any keyframes that I added, it wiped out the entire control (left leg/arm) on all files, even previous saved ones. How could it clear all keyframes on other saved files? I'm clearly missing something.. I guess I just have to start over, but who knows if it will strike again =( . A crash is fine, but disappearing keyframes on all files no matter what you saved has me super paranoid.

Hi @Anonymous

I'm not totally sure as we don't have any steps to reproduce this. The fact that your older files were getting altered is also weird and it may be an issue with your Maya so you may want to perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya.

If you can find steps to 100% reproduce this issue please let me know!

Thanks Sean,

Yea I know its an odd issue, I'll try the uninstall/reinstall but I think the damage is done. All those keys are gone, time to start over.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Sean,

No concrete fix yet to call a 'solution', but it may have to do with referencing the file vs importing it. I'll say its that I guess since I haven't had any issues yet.

I think I found a solution for it never happening again. Below are the steps I've taken since losing keys and I've never lost keys since:

1. Updated to Maya 2019

2. Using only Maya ASCII instead of Maya Binary

3. Stopped working on a MAC and then switching to a PC (I used to work on it in the morning on my MAC laptop and then email/USB stick to PC later. I've stopped doing that and I've never lost keys since.

Hello!

I'm having the same issue with my project. I'm actually working of a referenced character (maybe modelled and rigged in Maya 20) and I'm loosing keys randomly when I re-open maya after several times.

I'm using Maya 2019, working on .ma files everywhere (especially the referenced character) and using the animschool picker for selecting the rig controls.

Any suggestions on what could this be?

Thanks in advance!

Use MB for scenes with references. As observed, those are less prone to lose animation.
