Rigid body/ interpenetration test without physics or animation

Hello,

I've been using Maya for a scientific reconstruction and range of motion study. I'm looking for a simple and elegant way to test if two meshes are interpenetrating while actively manipulating one mesh (mostly with the Rotate tool). I've scoured the internet and numerous forums for the right solution, and most recommend either bulky Boolean commands, or using hard body collisions. Neither of those work quite as well as I would like, I just want to know as quickly as possible if a given mesh has been rotated into another, live feedback would be best.

I'm not sure if this is possible, or may require a custom solution. But any advice or tips the community could provide would be extremely helpful.

Cheers,
