Renderman doesn't work and make maya crash

Hi, I have a probleme since the new renderman came out and also Maya, whenever I want to start a render, Renderman opens the window for render but it's empty and it's written "empty" on the top of it. After a short time, it closes maya. I can't use the render, and also the IPR. I was on Maya 2018.4, I thought it was a problem about that since this version tend crash a lot. So I download maya 2018.3, and it worked a bit, but now it's not working anymore and I don't know what to do. Is anyone having the same issue ? Or a solution ?

Thanks

My only solution is using the default Maya Render View. Moreover IT is absolutely useless if it don't remains on the viewport during the render and shaders changes. Another news is the render in the viewport, similar to new Arnold Render for Maya.

If you haven't already, please contact the Pixar team by using the RenderMan Forum or RenderMan Answers forum. Autodesk is not the maintainers of RenderMan nor offer support on the matter.

Thank being said, the behavior you're describing is not normal and not something I've seen yet. I've been using RenderMan 22.[0,1,2] with Maya 2018.2 on Linux and Windows and have not come across this issue.

Cheers,

Mike

Yeah, I did. But since it affect Maya and it's here since I've download Maya 2018.4, I guess the problem can be related to autodesk as well. Maybe not, but if so, I prefer to ask the question in both places to find a solution.

Other person have the same issue so I don't know where it comes from and how to fix it.

can we download the render with the viewport ? I also need the render so I can compare to what I've done before if I make some changes.

hello,

Sorry but no, I still don't know where the problem might come from, I'm still looking but in the meantime I'm using an other computer to render. I let you know if I find anything.

Hello ! I found a post on Renderman forum which helped me resolve this. In Renderman Preferences you have a part called "Batch render", here I just changed "Spool style" from Maya batch to RIB and it worked ! Even if I do a normal IT render. I hope it will be your solution too.

Cheers

Hi, thank you very much for your answer !

I've taken my computer for repair and they seem to have solve the problem too. I think they have upload some video driver.

Turned out the computer specialist thought he had solved it, but he didn't. So I tried what you said.. and it still doesn't work. Thanks anyway..

Haha what a pain, problem came back for me as well. But I tried to run Maya as administrator and it works fine for now. Not sure its a permanant solution but so far so good ! There are also other solutions I've seen on the Renderman forum you can check there if you haven't been.

Cheers, happy new year 🙂

Hi,

I have this problem since this summer and still haven't found a solution.

I installed maya 2019 and now it dosn't crash anymore, and dosn't work though. Sript editor only says :

# Error: line 1: RuntimeError: file C:\Program Files\Pixar\RenderManForMaya-22.3\scripts\rfm2\render.py line 855: Error occurred during execution of MEL script
line 1: line 1: Cannot find procedure "rman"."

Also, interactive rendering dosn't work anymore, because "The renderer override ('RenderManViewport') is not registered. The override will not be set." So i can't even see the work i'm doing, yay !

I hope someone will find a solution, eventually..

Hey did you find a solution? I just downloaded Renderman and I was having the same issue.  I had Maya 2017,  and I re-installed it a couple of times, and renderman as well.. Everytime I tried to render, 'IT' didn't do anyting and Maya crashed. After several attempts I downloaded 2018, which didnt do the trick,  until I noticed that I had windows Defender on (I try to have it disabled all the time because it's just a pain in the ass).. and it blocked 'It' because it recognized it as an external app. So everytime I tried to do a render Maya just shut down. Do you have windows Defender on by any chance? If you do, try disabling it. After I did that I re installed both Maya and Renderman and now it's working fine.

If not..

Did you deleted prefs folder and stuff?

sorry for the delay, never undertood where the problem came from. I've reset my computer and it worked fine. On an ther computer, even afeter resetting it, it never worked. So... I still don't know where it comes from and how to fix it. But for anyone having the same issue try to reset the all thing and perhaps, with luck, it will work again. Otherwise, if you come across a solution, share it with us. I can see we're quite a lot to have that same odd problem

Hi folks.

I think I have solved it.

In Renderman preferences go to Render>IPR Render, and choose "Render to" >Maya render view.

It doesn't use "IT" that I think is the problem.

Hope it helps.

OK, I will comment here because it seems like this question has come up at least a dozen times just on a basic google search. A little background. I do remember a while back there was a similar issue with Renderman for Blender. If memory servers the solution was to simply not use IT, and disable it.

I have not found any one solution that works with Maya since I had this yesterday within an out after installing it. Using the above tip I simply changed the "render to" option to Maya Render View. Solved.
