Reference unload/remove results in exponential delay with increased rig count

Hi all!
We're using 2020.3 (windows) for our current feature and we're seeing dramatic delays in unloading or removing references in animation scenes containing lots of (20+) characters rigs.
Scenes load fine but unloading/removing a rig reference in a character heavy scene can hang Maya for 5-10 minutes. Not sure what's going on. Anyone else seen this behaviour or know what might be causing it?
