Question on Laptop Spec Compatibility

Hello!

I’ve been researching a laptop that I am considering getting for schoolwork from home, specifically one that can run the student version of Maya 2018. A friend of the family has an Alienware 17 (2014 model) that they are offering at a reasonable price, with barely any use on it.

Specs are as follows:

CPU: Core i7 4770 MQ

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M290X w/ 4gb GDDR5

Ram: 16gb

Apparently the motherboard was replaced recently, along with a lot of other components within the laptop, so these specs may have been upgraded a bit. I’m also fairly unfamiliar with computer specs in general, considering this is my first ever laptop purchase.

Would this computer be able to run a student version of Maya 2018? Would it run cleanly?

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous! Welcome to the community!

The GPU mentioned in your message is definitely in the list of certified hardware for Maya 2018. But, as you can see in the document, that GPU is featured among the certified graphics for MAC.

Granted that Maya should run fine while having almost any dedicated GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM, I would suggest to quickly test Maya 2018 on that laptop. Usually either it works or it does not. So, in order to be sure that it works, it should be enough to install it and launch it.

Let me know if you need additional information!
