I have a problem when trying to rename an object. It won't allow me to set the name instead keeps increasing the suffix by 1 every time. There is no duplicate object (I have checked with select code), and I have tried optimize scene size and re-import.
I cannot share the scene due to copyright, but may be able to send it to a private Autodesk server if a link is provided, thanks.

make sure there is nothing in the scene with the same name you want to give the object. names of display layers, shaders or file textures also count to name a few.
As mentioned same name was already checked. However just now the problem rectified itself by grouping the object under an empty group, then it could be renamed and retain the name after ungrouping. Its unclear if this was a memory glitch or something to do with a previous import causing a problem - I have heard using namespaces can cause future renamaing issues.
I don't know if it will actualy helps, but i faced a similar problem. I imported a named mesh as "chef_hat" and every time i renamed other meshes/groups it was includdig a prefix " chef_hat: ". So I restarted Maya and the problem disapeared.
